Making Taiko Drum
Making Taiko drums:
- Buckets (10-15 gallon) are good for high pitched drums that are typically used to keep the beat. (these are like the smaller drums you’ll see in the videos aka shime daiko).
- Sticks (Bachi) should be thinner too for more rapid and accurate playing. Snare sticks are a pretty standard size… but they can be pricey, so going to a hardware store and finding wood with the same length – diameter should work just as well
- Bamboo: Not sure if you have huge stalks of bamboo growing in your neck of the woods… but the stalks themselves (4-5 inches in diameter, 5-6 feet long) have been used in taiko performances.
- Wasted tires wrapped in duct tape are becoming the standard cost-effective drum that’s been sweeping the SGI taiko scene lately (Thanks to SUA’s taiko group hahaha). I’ve attached an epic instruction guide to make these. Call me if you’re confused. You should never have to pay for a wasted tire. EVER. Jiffy Lube, Firestone, etc tend to be happy if you take some tires. Let’s practice good health and wash your hands after handling these things.
- Standard Taiko sticks (Bachi): Typically 1 inch in diameter. Pro groups can go as much as 1.5 inches in diameter. 16 inches long. Sand the edges. Light weight woods are better for younger players. Blisters are inevitable. Bandaids and ointment are in constant demand. Hand and shoulder massages foster camaraderie and teamwork. Probably looking at $2~3 per pair.
- Typical Woods: Pine, Poplar.
- Fancy pro wood: White Oak with almost invisible grain (ONE DAY!!!)
- Shime (bucket) bachi: 1/2″ diameter, 16 inches long.
